President's Message

Hello Fellow Rotarians,

Can you believe it is March already? Spring is coming soon! This past Tuesday, we hosted the President of the Assistance League of San Bernardino, Felicia Alexander, as our distinguished speaker. Those in attendance learned about the great community service work done by the Assistance League, including providing $20 dental care for uninsured children and young adults ages 5 to 25 living in San Bernardino and surrounding communities.
No child is ever turned away for inability to pay and all dental care is provided through the Dr. Earl R. Crane Children’s Dental Health Center located at the Assistance League facility. The League also provides local children with hygiene bags and takes kids shopping for new school clothes through Operation School Bell.

Felicia discussed the upcoming Assistance League Headdress Ball, which is an annual fundraiser event to support the great work of the organization. Coming in September, the League will also partner with other local groups for the annual Wine and Cheese Near the Lagoon (formerly Wine and Cheese Under the Stars) event. Thank you to Mary Ellen Grande and Darcy McNaboe for arranging Felicia’s appearance at our meeting last week.

March is Rotary Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Month

This month, Rotary focuses on efforts to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions throughout the world. These are basic necessities for a healthy environment and a productive life. When people have access to clean water and sanitation, waterborne diseases decrease, children stay healthier and attend school more regularly, and mothers can spend less time carrying water and more time helping their families.

The Rotary Foundation is changing the world by providing grants for projects and activities focused on providing clean water, and enhancing sanitation and hygiene conditions. Since 2013, WASH Global Grants have funded more than $148 million in over 2,000 projects worldwide, including a new water supply and delivery system in Tanzania, improved water and sanitation conditions for nearly 1,800 students in 10 schools in Guatemala, the establishment of hundreds of toilets and handwashing stations in the Philippines, and the development of a program to provide clean water to every public school in Lebanon in partnership with UNICEF, the Red Cross, and World Vision.

Through these many important investments, Rotary volunteers of action have improved access to safely managed and basic WASH services to communities, schools, and healthcare facilities, while protecting and conserving water resources.

District Training Assembly

Mark your calendars for April 6th to attend the District 5330 Club Leader and Member Training Assembly!  This is another great opportunity to learn more about Rotary and the many opportunities we have to get involved and make a difference. Attendees will be able to select from a variety of short but informative courses taught by District leaders ranging from how to run a Rotary meeting to grant writing and peace building! The event will be held at Tahquitz High School in Hemet on Saturday. April 6, 2024 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.  Registration is via DACdb.  Hope to see you all there!

Gigi Hanna, Habitat for Humanity

Gigi Hanna moved to San Bernardino in the mid-90s to work as a reporter for The Sun Newspaper, then as associate director of the Water Resources Institute at Cal State San Bernardino, before serving 2 terms as San Bernardino’s last elected City Clerk. She retired in 2020 and moved to South Dakota to enjoy a life of family game nights, healthy living, world travel, and a slower pace.

It’s where Habitat for Humanity San Bernardino found her, shivering in 30-degrees-below-zero weather in December 2022, and asked if she would come back to lead the 32-year-old affiliate through some tough financial waters and spearhead the building of four homes for veterans and their families in San Bernardino. She has spent much of the past year building a volunteer corps, building a diverse board, gathering additional funding for the homes, including reopening the ReStore and learning a lot about the construction process. She is here today to give us an update about all that is happening.
