Michael Wells, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Redlands-Riverside, was our guest speaker this past week. He shared with us some amazing examples of the great work his organization does to improve the lives of youth in our region. The Boys and Girls Club mission is to enable all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. They reach over 7,000 children every day before and after school with academic, sports, and food service programs. The work done by this great organization to enrich the lives of children is remarkable. Notably, Michael is also a fellow Rotarian from the Redlands noon club. Thank you President-Elect Darcy McNaboe for arranging Michael’s presentation at our meeting.
We’re Sweet on Soldiers Project
Following our Club Assembly last August, our Club committed to supporting the local community service project, “We’re Sweet on Soldiers.” This project is the innovation of our dear fellow Rotarian Terri Relf, who has been running this great event for many years through the Inland Center Mall. The project focuses on collecting Valentine’s Day cards, thank you cards, and donation items for distribution to local and oversees service personnel. I encourage all Rotarians to take part in this project by making and/or purchasing the following items:
Valentine’s Day cards
Thank you cards
Non-perishable foods
New personal care items (e.g., shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush)
Other new/unused helpful items such as socks, plain t-shirts, batteries, etc.
You still have a couple of weeks remaining to prepare and support this effort. We will be collecting the above items during our regular noon meeting on Tuesday, February 6. If you are unable to bring your items to that meeting, you may also drop them off at the Inland Center Mall security booth anytime through February 13th. Donated items will be distributed by Help Heal Veterans, an organization that improves the quality of life for active-duty military personnel and hospitalized/homebound veterans.
Each donor should keep track of their donations and provide the following information to Terri: (1) total cards donated and (2) total personal items donated. Please be sure to count each item in a package separately. For example, if you donate one package containing six t-shirts, that would be a total of six items donated. Thank you for your support of this great community service project!

Rotary Leadership Institute
Great news! There are still three sessions remaining for Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) during the current Rotary year! RLI is a fantastic way to learn more about all things Rotary. You will be amazed at the many aspects of our great organization. This is a fantastic way to engage with Rotary and discover how you can become more involved. There are three parts to RLI and all three parts are offered at all in-person sessions, meaning you can start/continue the process at any time. The next in-person sessions will be held Saturday, March 9 and Saturday, May 11. Additionally, for the first time, RLI Part I will be offered online on Friday, February 16 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, February 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If you’d like to try the online session, please note that you must attend both Friday and Saturday sessions to complete RLI Part I. There is no cost for the online sessions and the $30 attendance fee for the live sessions is reimbursable by our club, so your only investment is your time! Registration is conducted via DACdb. Please let me know if you need assistance registering.
