President's Message

Hello Fellow Rotarians,

Thank you to everyone who came out on another very wet and rainy day to join us for our Rotary meeting last Tuesday!  Our guest speaker was fellow Rotarian Dan Munsey, Fire Chief/Fire Warden of the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District. Dan provided us with a very thorough presentation about Measure W, which is on the ballot for the upcoming March 5th election. After failed attempts in the past, this measure is another effort to eliminate a special property tax that supports and helps fund the County Fire Protection District. The parcel tax is about $172 per year and brings in over $47 million annually, which is a significant funding source for the fire service. This tax only applies to those who reside in Fire Protection District 5, which includes the City of San Bernardino. If this funding source is lost, the Fire Protection District will have some difficult decisions to make regarding how to continue to provide outstanding service to our communities. Remember, a “no” vote keeps the tax and funding in place for the County Fire Protection District while a “yes” vote would eliminate the tax and funding. Please make your voice heard on this and other very important topics as we vote at the polls on March 5!

Rotarians celebrate Black History Month

As you know, February is Black History Month and as Rotarians, we honor the contributions and legacy of Black Americans across history in the fields of industry, politics, science, culture, and more.  We especially celebrate the countless achievements of Black Americans who have moved our country forward in the pursuit of freedom and justice for everyone, including civil rights pioneers such as Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks.

This year’s theme is “African Americans and the Arts,” focusing on key Black American influence on visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary, and other forms of cultural expression. Let us continue to recognize and honor Black culture, Black leaders, Black innovation, and Black triumphs.

Rotary Continues to Thrive in Ukraine

The following is an excerpt from a recent article by Arnold Grahl published on www.rotary.org.

Two years after Russian forces invaded Ukraine, Rotary members around the globe continue to raise funds and send medicine, fuel, and other essential supplies to those affected by the conflict.

A special relief fund created by The Rotary Foundation now closed to contributions, raised more than US$17.4 million from donors around the world and has funded more than 400 grants that have allowed Rotary members to provide different kinds of help.

In addition, many Rotary clubs and districts have organized local humanitarian response initiatives. Guided by District 2232 (Ukraine), these efforts have directed shipments of medicine, medical equipment, ambulances, generators, heating fuel, winter supplies, and other relief to communities in need.

Mykola Stebljanko, a past governor of District 2232, says the huge response since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 has strengthened Rotary in Ukraine.

“We have become more active, more effective. We are a more solid organization now,” Stebljanko says. “We receive a lot of requests from our communities. Lots of outside clubs want to help us. People see this and ... want to join Rotary.”
