President's Message

Hello Fellow Rotarians,

During our meeting this past Tuesday, we were delighted to hear from Michelle Skiljan, Senior Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations with the Advancement Team of California State University San Bernardino.  We learned a great deal about the Cal State organization, including the fact that it is the nation’s largest four-year public university system. We also heard amazing facts about our local campus in San Bernardino, which had its first graduating class of 59 students in 1967 and now has an enrollment of over 18,500 students! Of those students, 83% are minorities and 56% of undergraduates come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. CSUSB boasts 5 academic colleges, an auxiliary campus in Palm Desert, and a worldwide outreach program via the College of Extended and Global Education. We truly have a gem right here in San Bernardino, and we were so happy to hear of the many great programs, projects, and opportunities offered at CSUSB. Thank you President-Elect Darcy McNaboe for arranging Michelle’s talk with us.

No Meeting This Week

There will be no Rotary meeting this Tuesday, January 30, 2024.  The Elks Club is closed as it is the fifth Tuesday of the month, and we decided to hold our January 2 meeting instead of the January 30 meeting to host our Rotary Life Four-Way Speech Contest.  We will see you back at our next regularly-scheduled meeting on Tuesday, February 6 at noon at the Elks Lodge!

We’re Sweet on Soldiers Project

Please remember to support the We’re Sweet on Soldiers Project. Our club voted to make this one of our community service projects for the year, and the clock is ticking!  Please bring the following items to our next Rotary meeting on February 6, which will be collected and later distributed to support local and overseas service personnel:

  • Valentine’s Day cards
  • Thank you cards
  • Non-perishable foods
  • New personal care items (e.g., shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush)
  • Other new/unused helpful items such as socks, plain t-shirts, batteries, etc.

If you are unable to bring your items to the February 6 meeting, you may also drop them off at the Inland Center Mall security booth anytime through February 13th.

Rotary Life Philanthropy Project

The Rotary Life Sophomore Class is responsible for putting together an annual Rotary Life philanthropy project, which is supported by all Rotary Life students in every class.  This year, the Sophomores have elected to support our local Ronald McDonald House near Loma Linda University Medical Center. The students will be accepting donations from Rotarians and the local community to build Easter baskets for children and families housed at Ronald McDonald House as well as their children who are receiving care at LLUMC Children’s Hospital.

Although Easter is still two months away, this is a great time to collect these items because the Rotary Life Students need many of the same items as we are collecting for the We’re Sweet on Soldiers Project. Taking another look at the list above, simply substitute Easter cards for Valentine’s Day cards and children’s personal items in lieu of adult personal items, and then add in some Easter baskets, candy, and other treats! Hopefully you’ll be able to get all of your shopping for both of these projects done in a single trip. If you have any questions about the Rotary Life philanthropy project, please contact Secretary Lindsey Cobaugh and Director Shirley Jean, two of our Rotary Life Sophomore Class advisors.  Thank you for your support!
